A major court judgment is about to change things in Plateau State. A State High Court has just ruled that any Hausa person born and grew up in Jos North Local Government Area is officially an indigene of the area. This historic decision by Justice C. Donglong of High Court 17 changes the old rules about who gets local government identification.

​The whole issue started when two people, Fatima Baba Akawu and Baba Alhaji Akawu, took the Jos North local government to court. They filed the case because local authorities refused to give Fatima an Indigene Certificate. They asked the judge a simple question: If a person is born in Jos North and her father lives there legally, shouldn't she get her certificate, even if she is from the Hausa ethnic group?

​Justice Donglong agreed with them completely. The judge ruled that because Fatima was born in Jos North and her family belongs to the community, she has every right to be called an indigene. The court then ordered the local government to give her the certificate immediately.

​This judgment is a very big deal because the topic of who is an indigene and who is a settler has been debated in Jos for a very long time. This new law could change how things work with local jobs, politics, and how different communities live together.
