Nigeria’s premier policy institution, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), came under a violent assault late Monday night as suspected gunmen attempted to breach the facility.
The attack, which occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. on June 15, 2026, resulted in the deaths of three security operatives. Reports confirm the fatalities include two soldiers and one police officer who were stationed at the institute’s entrance.
According to eyewitness accounts and staff members, the assailants arrived at the facility and immediately opened fire, triggering a fierce gun battle with security personnel. The operatives successfully engaged the attackers, preventing them from penetrating the interior of the institute where course participants are currently lodged.
The management of NIPSS has confirmed the incident in an official statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Department, Dr. Osime Samuel. The Institute emphasized that the situation has been brought under control and that there is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, or facilities.
"The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies," the statement read. NIPSS has further urged the public to refrain from speculation while security agencies conduct a thorough investigation into the motive and identity of the assailants.
