There was major chaos and gridlock along Rayfield Road in Jos earlier today as hundreds of commercial tricycle (Keke) operators blocked the area to stage a massive protest at the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
The operators completely grounded transport activities in the axis, leaving many local commuters stranded for hours. According to the protesting drivers, the action became necessary due to what they describe as continuous, systemic extortion, arbitrary impoundment of their tricycles, and a heavy burden of multiple taxation by traffic officials.
Many of the drivers lamented that the daily chase by VIO operatives has turned their legitimate hustle into a cat-and-mouse game, making it nearly impossible to make an honest living and feed their families after paying various unapproved fines.
While VIO authorities are yet to issue a formal statement regarding these serious allegations, the protest has triggered a massive debate across J-Town about the need for proper regulation versus the fair treatment of everyday transport workers who keep the city moving.
