MURIC Urges University of Jos to Adjust Friday Scheduling to Respect Jumu’ah Prayers

University of Jos, urging the institution to discontinue the scheduling of official programmes, lectures, and administrative meetings during the Jumu’ah prayer hours every Friday.

In a statement released on Monday, the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, underscored the importance of this adjustment in fostering an inclusive environment. He emphasized that the current practice inadvertently infringes upon the religious rights of Muslim students and staff members who are required to attend the vital weekly congregational prayer.

MURIC’s appeal is grounded in the need for institutional sensitivity, arguing that the university administration should proactively plan academic and administrative activities to avoid direct conflicts with the Jumu’ah period. By adjusting the scheduling, the university would not only uphold the constitutional right to freedom of worship but also promote a more harmonious campus culture.

As of now, the University of Jos management has not issued an official response to the request. Stakeholders and members of the campus community are keenly watching to see how the administration will address this call for improved religious accommodation.
